I found a recipe (paula dean's) with oxtails. what exactly is oxtails?

Oxtails that they sell in the store are from cows. I see them in all the supermarkets I go to. I use them often and they are very expensive!I found a recipe (paula dean's) with oxtails. what exactly is oxtails?
Why would anyone know they weren't from ';actual oxen anymore';? Let's try looking up the difference between a cow and an ox..... Report Abuse

Ox tails come from the larger part of the tail from beef. As the tail gets smaller there is no meat around the bones. Oxtails make a very good broth and the meat is very tender. Good substitutes are beef short ribs, beef shanks or beef stew. Report Abuse

Use your common sense girl. OXTAILS!
They are real tails from real oxen (catch the ox and then cut off it's tail), usually used in german recipies for soup or stews.
As far as I know, it is sliced ox tail. At least that is what my mom told me. I substitute stewing beef or chicken thighs. Guess I'm a little squeamish that way.
As in oxtail soup....it is the cut tail of an ox.
I would use beef shank for when ever this recipe calls for oxtails.
They are actually tails of oxen.
An oxtail is an ox tail - the tail of an ox (or probably steer). You can find them in meat markets or in the meat section of better grocery stores.
